「NAGA」は、前作「SAMELAND」に続く、フィールドワークから生まれた写真集の第二弾となります。

密林に覆われた山道、丘陵に並ぶ竹で編まれた家々、鮮やかな色彩の民族衣装と入れ墨、闇夜の儀式、動物の顔が彫り込まれた木製ドラム、歌い踊る人影、跪き祈りを捧げる子供達…

撮影地となったミャンマー・ザガイン管区は、インドとミャンマーに跨りナガ族が暮らす地域です。奥深い山の尾根に住まう彼らは狩猟採集を中心とし、外の世界と距離を置き、独自の自然信仰を受け継ぎ生きてきました。日々山の中を歩き獲物を捕らえ、逞しく暮らす彼らの身体性や身に纏う赤と黒を基調とした力強い色彩の布地などに惹きつけられ、津田は二度に渡りナガ族の土地を訪れることになります。その中で津田は、近代化の流れを受けキリスト教文化へと変容していったナガ族の生き方と出会ってゆきます。古くはモンゴロイドに属するナガ族は、我々のルーツと照らし合わせてみても、案外かけ離れた存在ではないのかもしれません。

“NAGA” is the second publication following “SAMELAND”, a photo book sourced from Nao Tsuda’s fieldwork.

The mountain trail covered in thick forest, houses weaved out of bamboo lining the hill, brightly colored native attire and tattoos, wooden drums with an animal face carving, shadows of dancing people, and children praying on their knees…
This is the Sagaing Region Myanmar, which extends the borders of India and Myanmar, where the Naga people call home. The Naga people have been living by hunting and farming on the ridge of the deep in the forest, separate from the outside world, passing down their unique indigenous Animism beliefs. Hunting for prey on foot in the mountains daily, the courageous Naga people’s embodiment of strength and striking red and black clothes fascinated and beckoned Tsuda to visit the land of the Naga people twice. Through his travels, Tsuda encounters the Naga people’s way of living as it sees gradual influenced through modernization and the influx of Christian culture. In ancient times the Naga people were part of the Mongoloid family, and their genetic roots might not be too far removed from our own.
